NORWICH — The Nursery School and preschool students at the Norwich Family YMCA spent much of last week out and about learning the importance of community helpers.

The students visited the Norwich Fire Department, the Norwich Police station, U.S. Post Office, as well as the Guernsey Memorial Library.

“Pre-schoolers even had a few parents come in and talk to us about their special jobs,” said Pre-Kindergarten teacher Kaitlin Korver. “Tim Miller who works for Chenango County brought in his dump truck and the students got to climb up inside the cab. We walked around the truck and Tim answered all of our questions,”

Daniel Buckley brought in a bulldozer for the students to marvel at, and Buckley demonstrated first-hand how the machine crawls around behind the YMCA. Korver indicated that Matthew Roberts, a Chenango County Sheriff's Deputy drove his cruiser in for students to check out as well. “He even let the students sit in the back seat,” said Korver.

Derek Marks, who is a state trooper also brought in a police car along with Tom Miller, a police officer for Norwich, who brought in his police dog.

Meghan Foulds came in to talk to us about her job as a nurse, and Meena Conant who is a music teacher came in to sing.

“The students had such a wonderful week learning about all of these fun jobs,” said Korver.
