CANTON – A star Norwich basketball alumnus recently reached a pinnacle in his career, as he hit the 1,000 point mark for the St. Lawrence Saints.

Kyle Edwards, who is currently a senior at the University, and captain of the basketball team, hit the milestone against SUNY Brockport.

“It was a goal that I had hoped to reach by the end of my career so it was a great feeling to accomplish it,” said Edwards.

Edwards has played a key role for the Saints team over the past four years. In the 2013-2014 season, he earned the Liberty League Rookie of the Year award, after averaging 11.4 points per game. That same year, Edwards was also named to the conference’s All-Rookie squad.

After missing eight games to begin his sophomore season, Edwards still managed to come back to the team and average over 10 points per game, as well as shooting 25 three-pointers.

During his junior year, Edwards was among the leaders for the Saints in nearly all offensive categories. He played and started in 25 games, averaging 14.9 points, for a total of 373 on the season, while also leading the team with 33 steals and 84 assists. Edwards also capped his amazing season as a junior captain by achieving First-Team All-Liberty League honors.

Edwards’ success can be traced back to his days at Norwich High School, where he was a multi-sport athlete, participating in both basketball and football. Edwards maintains that he learned many valuable things from his playing days with the Tornado.

“I think that the main thing I learned was that you have to be willing to put in extra work outside of practice time in order to accomplish certain goals on the court,” said Edwards. “I was lucky to have come out of the Norwich program where there was always coaches who were willing to sacrifice their time to help me reach those goals.”

As he turns his focus to completing the remainder of his senior season, Edwards still has one main goal in mind, winning a Liberty League Championship.

“I feel good about how I have been playing so far, but we have such a well rounded team this year that there are other guys stepping up and making plays for us when we need them,” said Edwards. “I think losing in the Championship game last year has really motivated us on a different level, which will hopefully get us to where we want to go.”

St. Lawrence currently stand at a 12-2 record on the season, and are 5-0 in league play. They will face off against RIT on Friday, Jan. 20, as they continue their quest to be crowned Liberty League Champions.
