SHERBURNE – In a battle of the north and south of Chenango County, Sherburne-Earlville wrestling hosted the Oxford Blackhawks on their senior night, winning over Oxford by a score of 28-21.
On Wednesday, Feb. 1, S-E honored their lone senior, 285 pounder Walter Kiehn.
Kiehn was met in the center prior to the start of the dual by his parents – unfortunately for Kiehn, Oxford had no 285 pound wrestler therefore a double forfeit occurred at the weight.
Despite the ultimate loss on the night, Oxford jumped out to an early 6-0 lead over S-E when Dakota Freidel pinned S-E's Alex Thompson in a quick 3:16 – following a 0-0 first period.
The Marauders avenged the loss at 195 pounds, with a win by pin directly following to even the score at 6-6; as Colby Spavin snagged a pin by headlock at 1:03 over Oxford's Jon Walker.
With a double forfeit at 285, and 106 pounds, and an Oxford win by forfeit at 99 pounds, Oxford took the lead at 12-6 heading into the 113 pound matchup on the night.
Brady Smith of Oxford pulled the bag over Jason Price's head for a 12-6 win at the weight. Smith controlled the match early leading 7-0 after the second period reversal, before holding on for the scramble that ensued in the third.
