GREENE – The Greene girls varsity basketball team saw increased action this past weekend – not only did they travel to Walton for a MAC league tournament win but the very next day the lady Trojans took to the road again for a game against Chenango Valley.
WALTON – Coming into the weekend, Greene sat at a solid 10-7 overall record with a league record of 6-5. This placed the Greene girls as the seventh seed in the MAC tournament – which began the semifinal round on Friday, Feb. 10 – Greene traveled to Walton (sixth seed, 6-5 league record), a Friday night game in which the Trojans earned the win at 51-34.
The duo of Alyssa Sands and McKenna Sergi took the court by storm this past Friday, as the pair combined for 26 points in the contest – Sergi 14, Sands 12 – helping to lift Greene to the road win.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the Trojans, as the Warriors looked to defend their home court to the tune of an 8-8 ball game after the first period.
The second period was sparked by a pair of field goals from Emma Smith of Greene who inspired a pair of Sergi long-balls and a Sands field goal – all amounting to outscoring Walton in the second period 12-6. Greene took the lead at the half, at 20-14.
