GREENE – Hosting their annual field hockey tournament, this time in the early parts of the season, Greene invited Afton, Maine-Endwell, and reigning state champions Whitney Point – an impressive group – to a weekend of field hockey in lady Trojan territory.
“The tournament was great, we had four of the top teams in the section (Section IV) playing in one place this past weekend. It was awesome to have that level of competition for people to watch,” said Greene head coach Christine McCabe.
This tournament was no joke, featuring Afton who was a 2016 Class C sectional runner-up, host Greene who was a 2016 Class C Sectional semifinalists, Maine-Endwell who was the 2016 Class A Sectional Champions, and Whitney Point who is the reigning Class C Sectional Champions and State Champions from 2014-2016.
Round 1: Whitney Point defeats Greene 3-1
Greene was able to maintain a close game for the first half of play, bringing the score to a 1-0 score – due to a McKenna Sergi goal from the top of the circle.
Whitney Point saw adversity and tied the game right before the half at 1-1. In the second half, Whitney Point slightly pulled away with a 2-1 score – that is when Sergi again attacked the net.
Sergi found the net, only to have the goal called back – an unfortunate turn of events for the lady Trojans.
