Day 2 punches tickets to New York State Championships for Chenango County athletes

ENDICOTT – The second day of the Section IV State Qualifying meet saw the same type of action as day one. The only difference was the cloudy skies and wind. With threats of thunderstorms in the forecast at Union-Endicott High School, the weather held off for the event to allow the second day to be completed without a hitch.

Right out of the gate, the excitement started as both the girls and boys 100 meter dash finals kicked off the action for day two.

In the girls 100 meter dash final, Julia Oglesby of Unadilla Valley and Milla Gonzalez of Oxford both had spots due to their times raced on day one. Their competition was tough in the loaded meet as the fastest sprinter in New York – Vestal’s Tia Jones – was seeded at the top.

Jones raced to a time of 12.47 and was known to win the race by her lead out in front of the other runners. The battle, however, was for second and third place.

Oglesby and Jones’ teammate, Jecholiah Stephenson, were neck-and-neck throughout the entire straight away of the track and right up the finish line.

It was the Storm sprinter who crossed the finish line first as her head reached before Stephenson, locking in second place overall for the meet. Oglesby came in as the first runner for the Division-II and secured her spot for the state meet.
