HARPURSVILLE – Harpursville/Afton’s Brody Oleksak and Zack Fynboe connected on a 40 yard reception to bring the ball down to the one yard line. With 15 seconds remaining, their teammate Luke Merrill ran the next play across the goal line to give the Hornets a 14-7 in over the Delhi Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs struck first, putting their only seven points up on the board in the first quarter.
Throughout out the first half, the Hornets were in the red zone four or five times but were unable to come away with any points because of a penalty or a turnover. “We shot ourselves in the foot early but we recovered and came away with the win,” said Hornets’ first-year head coach Brian Mister.
Mister said he made some changes to his defense at the half time break and that allowed Harpursville/Afton to shut down Delhi in the second half.
In the fourth, the Hornets were able to get on the board with a Zach Gardape one yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion running attempt failed, making the score 7-6 before the winning drive.
Merrill also tacked on the two-point conversion following his game-winning score by running it into the end-zone. He finished the game with 101 rushing yards on 18 carries and the one touchdown.
Oleskak finished the game with nine completions and 162 yard through the air. Shane Hoover made five catches for 94 yards while Fynbone ended the day with four catches and 68 yards.
