ONEONTA – Norwich fell behind 9-0 in the early minutes of the game on the road against long-time rival Oneonta Tuesday night. The Purple Tornado were unable to catch the Yellowjackets throughout the remainder of the contest as Oneonta avenged their early season loss to Norwich, 61-41.
The Yellowjackets’ Teddy McGraw and Graham Wooden combined for 40 of the home team’s 61 points on senior night.
“Wooden and McGraw just took it to us,” said Norwich head coach Tom Collier. “We had no response.”
Oneonta ended the first quarter leading 13-6 and extended the margin to 11 by the intermission break.
Norwich came out of the break, mounting some offense as they turned to Skylar Wenzel – their big man in the middle.
“Once we got the ball into Skylar we were able to compete,” Collier said. Wenzel ended the night as the only Purple Tornado in the scoring column with double figures, finishing with 11 points.
The Tornado pulled within seven points in the third but Wooden drained back-to-back 3-pointers for the Yellowjackets, ending the Norwich run.
Wooden led all scorers with 21 points while McGraw added with 19. Khi Atchinson aided in the Oneonta win, kicking in 15 points.
Mujuni Mutabiilwa chipped in nine points for the Norwich offense while Thomas Flanagan added eight in the loss.
