Greene Labor Day Celebration Marking 100 Years With 1,919 Acts Of Kindness

By: Pete Mansheffer

GREENE – Since the 99th edition of the Greene Labor Day Picnic finished last September, the Labor Day Picnic Committee has been working hard to make the centennial celebration the best yet.

One of those ideas is to get people to do nice things for each other. From now until Aug. 15, the committee’s goal is to document 1,919 acts of kindness.

The first Greene Labor Day Picnic was held on Sept. 1, 1919.

Mow your neighbor’s lawn, read to a child (or adult), visit a shut-in, clean litter off the roads, walk a neighbor’s pet, bake cookies, driving someone to a doctor’s appointment. Younger children could draw a picture or card for someone, do chores around the house, or help someone with his/her homework – the possibilities are endless!
