Norwich’s magic number for playoffs is down to one

NORWICH – Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of fifth, Norwich needed to get their bats going in order to take down the Seton Catholic Saints Wednesday for their magic number to become one to make the sectional tournament.

Dakota Franklin got things started in the inning with a lead-off hit, putting him on the bases for teammate Marcus Cashman. Cashman ripped a line-drive to the outfield, sending Franklin into score while the Tornado senior landed on third base.

Next to the batter’s box was JT Vinal with his teammate in scoring position. Vinal didn’t waste any time during the at-bat, sending a the ball deep over the left field fence for the two-run home run.

His shot became the eventual game winner as Cashman and the Norwich defense held off the Saints to win 3-2.

Cashman, who reached the maximum pitch count of 105 pitches with one out remaining in the contest, struck out 14 in his seven innings pitched. He surrendered four hits and allowed one earned run on his way to the win.
