Greene tops Bobcats in MAC consolation game
OXFORD – The Blackhawks were tied 1-1 with Unatego after four innings of play but the errors by the Oxford defense were costly and allowed the Spartans to run away with the 11-1 win Thursday.
“There were too many errors to overcome in this one for us,” said head coach Ed Holmquist. Oxford ended the game with seven total, some resulting in Unatego putting runs up on the scoreboard.
The Blackhawks Varsity knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the fourth inning when Allison Beckwith sent a line drive double to left field, scoring Trinity Vargas from first. Vargas was on the bases after drawing a four-pitch walk by the Spartans’ Paige McCoy.
However, after scoring two runs in the fifth inning, Unatego added another five runs in the sixth to secure the win.
McCoy went seven innings in the pitchers circle, allowing one run on two hits and striking out eight.
Beckwith was on the rubber for Oxford to start. She surrendered eight runs on six hits over five and two-thirds innings. The Oxford senior continued to add to the strike out record, sitting down 11 in the loss. Karly Marshman threw one and one-third innings out in relief.
Beckwith and Trinity Vargas each collected one hit to lead the Blackhawks at the plate.
