BROCKPORT – Unadilla Valley eighth-grader Bailey Shoemaker came away with a runner-up finish in the NYSPHSAA girls golf championships at Deerfield Golf and Country Club in Brockport. It’s the young golfer’s second straight second-place finish in the state championship tournament.
Topping Shoemaker was 2018 defending New York State Champion Melanie Green of Medina from Section VI.
A season ago, Shoemaker came from five strokes back to place second and shot a record-low 65 at Bethpage Yellow course in Long Island.
The Storm’s youngster – sporting her University of Southern California cap all-weekend – started the two-round tournament off with a 73, finishing the first round day just one stroke back of the leader Green, who ended her first day shooting an even par at Deerfield.
Shoemaker’s front-nine score of day one was even but she did reach 1-under-par after recording a birdie on the third hole. Back-to-back pars on four and five kept her at 1-under but a bogey on six brought her back to even.
On the par three eighth hole, the UV stand-out once again birdied, putting her a 1-inder before the final hole of the front-night. She ended up with a bogey on nine, bringing her once again to even at the turn.
