MIDDLETOWN – For the next two days, the Middletown High School track and field areas will see the best of the best throughout New York battling for the state championship medal as the NYSPHSAA Championship meet takes place.
Several runners and jumpers from the local area will attempt to bring home the 2019 state champion title in an aray of events.
Norwich’s Gawronski brother and sister duo are set to duke it out against the rest of the field in the 400 meter dash for Gabe and the 400 meter hurdles for Katie.
Gabe, who ran a time of 49.94 at the Section IV State Qualifier, is scheduled to be in the final heat as he sits in the eighth-seed. The top time in the event this year was registered by Reese Casinelli of Newfane at 49.12 – .82 seconds faster than Gabe’s time. The two will more than likely be on the track at the same time.
Sister Katie was awarded the 11th seed for the 400 meter hurdles, an event the junior participated in at the state championships a year ago. Her 1:06.25 set the school record for the second time she has taken on the event as a member of the Purple Tornado squad.
Also from Norwich is sprinting youngster Miranda Cole. Cole, a freshman on the team, will take on the 100 and 200 meter events as well as the 4x100 meter relay with teammates Angela Carlson, Riley Marsh and Hailey Colabelli.
