NEW BERLIN – Friday afternoon saw the host Unadilla Valley Storm go down in the second game of the first round of the NY Pizzeria Annual Girls Soccer tournament, falling to Midstate Athletic Conference foe Bainbridge-Guilford 2-1.
The first half scoreless between the two teams came to a close within the first 15 minutes of the second as B-G’s Kate Roefs received a pass from teammate Elizabeth DuMond and fired it into the back of the net with 32:22 left in the game.
Later in the half, after a handball in the box was called against the Bobcats, Meegan White – the Storm’s keeper – came down the field and took the free penalty kick. She was able to put the ball past the B-G keeper to score the game-tying goal with 19:13 showing on the clock.
For the next 17 minutes, the game once again was scoreless with both teams holding possession in the middle of the field for most of the time.
That was until under two minutes remaining and Roefs once again went on a run after a pass from colleague Ashley Matthews and scored her second goal of the game.
The Matthews-Roefs connection proved to be the game winner, sending the Bobcats into the championship game and the host Storm into the consolation game.
Saturday saw both teams take to their respective pitches at 11 a.m. and both come away with wins, giving the Bainbridge-Guilford the 2019 NY Pizzeria Trophy.
