Section IV Preliminaries Successful For Norwich, Oxford And Greene Girls’ Swimming

By: Meagan Schulz

OWEGO – The Lady Purple Tornado, Lady Blackhawks and Lady Trojans will see several swimmers head to Watkins Glen High School, eyeing a top eight finish at the Section IV Championship meet Saturday as all had strong performances by the members of each team.

Norwich will see 14 swimmers, 12 swimming in at least two events, take on the rest of the field in either the A or B final Saturday while Greene will have five and Oxford send their lone member, Regan Finnegan, to the finals day.

The top eight seeds are scheduled to swim in the A final of each event while the next eight – nine through 16 – will race in the B final. All of the top 16 swimmers can earn points for their team to have a chance at claiming the team crown in their respective classes.

Finnegan will be seen in the A final in the 200 yard freestyle event, a race she participated in each Norwich meet as an exhibition swimmer. Her times throughout the season seeded her for the preliminary meet Wednesday in Watkins Glen and she registered a time of 2:20.9, setting up a seventh-seed in the finals race.

The Oxford Blackhawk will also swim in the B final for the 100 yard backstroke after a time of 1:16.09 placed her 11th overall out of the Class C/D field. Finnegan is seeded third for the B final race.

The Lady Purple Tornado’s Abby Hansen, Kaitlyn Blaisure, Margi Winter and Angela Carlson wasted no time at all in Wednesday’s preliminaries to knock off a 24-year-old school record.

In the first event of the night, the four Norwich swimmers took on the field in the 200 yard medley relay and raced to a time of 1:54.08 to erase the old record by more than a second. The group’s time in event has placed them as the second fastest team for the A final.

The same group qualified for the A final in the 400 yard freestyle relay, racing to a time of 3:58.4. Blaisure, Hansen, Winter and Carlson are also seeded second in the relay event.

Most of the girls on the Tornado swim team dropped several seconds off their seeding times – the best times recorded for each of the swimmers over the course of the season.

Senior Emerson Burton took five seconds off her time in the 200 yard freestyle while shedding five and half seconds from her 500 yard freestyle time. Burton will see the A final in the 200 yard and is seeded first in the B final.

Haley Shattuck will race alongside her teammate Burton in both the 200 yard freestyle A final and B final in the 500 yard freestyle.

The two will team up for the 200 yard freestyle relay with fellow Norwich swimmers Julia Llewellyn and Aurora Strauch in the A final as well.

Swimming in the B final of the 200 yard freestyle will be Tanner Olds who placed 13th overall in the preliminaries, setting her in the fifth seed for the race Saturday afternoon. The Norwich sophomore will be in the 100 yard backstroke B final after swimming a time of 1:15.54, placing her in the sixth spot in the B finals.

On top of the two relay events, Blasiure, Winter, Carlson and Hansen will be participating in the A final of two individual races.

Blaisure is the currently the top seed in the 50 yard freestyle event after her quick race posted a time of 25.47. Winter and Carlson will join her in the A final as the fourth and fifth seed as both swam a time below 26 seconds.
