NEW BERLIN – Nearly even through the first three quarters of play, the Lady Trojans of Greene used a 21-point fourth quarter to take the Midstate Athletic Conference victory over the host Unadilla Valley Storm 47-38.
Greene held a slight advantage after the first quarter, 8-6, and continued to cling to that margin through the next two quarters. Both the Trojans and the Lady Storm scored eight points in the second and 10 points in the third, giving Greene the 26-24 lead at the end of 24 minutes of play.
UV brought the score to within four points after Greene’s early run in the last stanza but after going 0-for-4 at the foul line, the Storm’s offense struggled while the Trojans excelled at the free throw line. Greene went 11-for-14 at the charity stripe as Unadilla Valley was forced to foul in the closing minutes.
Payton Yahner went a perfect 4-for-4 in the fourth and teammate McKenzie Drew made both of her attempts. Both finished with a team-best 12 points in the MAC win.
Greene’s Kylee Peck and Olivia Kennedy each chipped in nine points. Peck scored six of her nine from behind the 3-point line.
The setback for the Storm in the loss was their turnover total. Head coach Brandi Whitbeck stated her team tallied 25 turnovers throughout the game.
