UV takes down Bobcats and Oxford falls to Morris

COBLESKILL – As one of just two teams from Section IV that competed in the Cobleskill Classic over there weekend, the Norwich boys basketball team took on Section II powerhouse Schalmont of Schenectady. Despite trailing by 15 points at one point in the first quarter, the Purple Tornado rallied in the next three quarters to win 90-75.

Tommy Flanagan and Carson Maynard each dropped a team-high 23 points in the Sunday matinee victory as two of the four Norwich scorers that reached double figures. Joining them were JT Vinal with 15 and Jahlil Jones, who chipped in 10 points.

The Schalmont Sabers were led by Shane O’Dell’s 41 points. O’Dell, a 6 foot-6 inch senior for the Sabers did all of his damage from the paint, making 18 field goals and going to the line eight times.

Teammate Jake Sanford added 15 and Trent Randle kicked in 12 in the loss.

Schalmont built a 22-10 lead by the end of the first but Norwich quickly responded with balanced scoring in the second stanza

The Tornado chipped away at the early double digit deficit with eight different players scoring at least one bucket in the quarter. Vinal went 3-for-4 at the foul line and scored four points to help Norwich pull within four at halftime.
