S-E falls to Cooperstown in consolation game

SHERBURNE – The Red Devils of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill took the win in the championship game over the Storm of Unadilla Valley Monday night 68-42 to behind the performance of the Sherburne-Earlville’s Tip-Off Tournament Most Valuable Player Phoenix Weydig.

Weydig tallied 22 points – 18 of his points came from behind the 3-point arc – to rally past the Storm, capturing the tournament’s title.

After a first quarter run by VVS put Unadilla Valley in an 11-point hole, the Storm made a strong attempt to come rolling back into the game.

At the start of the third quarter, UV trailed by 12 points but cut the lead down to eight later in the stanza to keep the game within striking distance.

However, the Storm’s offense slowed down and nearly came to a halt. A basket by Cameron Osborne, Unadilla Valley’s All-Tournament Team award winner, and teammate Timmy Postma registered five points from the free throw line was the offensive production for UV team in the final eight minutes of play.

VVS, who made 10 3-point field goals in the contest, knocked down four in the quarter as part of their 20-7 final run.

Bailey Janowski contributed four points in the fourth while Weydig hit two from long distance. Janowski added 14 points while Devils’ colleague Bryce Palmer also reached doube figures with 13 points for VVS.
