OV picks up second straight victory
BAINBRIDGE – With 2.2 seconds left in the game, Oxford’s head coach Booker Davis called a timeout to draw up a play to score the game-winner.
Out of the quick break in the action, the play was designed to go to the corner for the Oxford senior Matt Roach. Roach quickly caught the ball and fired up the shot.
The picture perfect ending for a battle between Bainbridge-Guilford and the Blackhawks ended with Roach draining the shot from the baseline corner to steal the 47-44 win over the Bobcats Thursday night.
“I was actually shocked he was able to get open and get the shot off, as I’m pretty sure everyone in the gym knew I wanted the ball to go to [Matt] Roach,” said Davis.
Oxford tied the game at 41-41 with 2:50 left and took the lead 20 seconds later. The Blackhawks held onto the slight advantage until the third 3-pointer of the quarter fell with 38 seconds remaining in the game, tying the contest once again at 44-44.
To start the game, Oxford held a 13-8 lead after the first but Haiden Burns of B-G brought his team within three before the halftime break. Burns tallied nine of the team’s 11 points in the stanza to held keep the Bobcats close before the start of the second half.
