ELMIRA – Trailing by as many as 13 points at one point in the second quarter of action, Oxford’s head coach Chris Palmer never counted his team out of the game against sixth-seeded Elmira Notre Dame.
The Lady Blackhawks shocked many over the next two quarters of play, turning around the once double-digit deficit to come away with a 60-57 upset victory against the host Crusaders.
Paced by Caitlyn Quigley’s 17 points, Oxford had five different players score in the contest. What proved to be one of the differences was the Blackhawks had three register double-doubles on the night.
Karley Miller, Madalyn Barrows and Olivia Kelsey all posted double digits in both the scoring and rebounding columns. Miller ended the night with 14 and 10, Kelsey came away with 11 and 11 and Barrows – Oxford’s point guard who played all 32 minutes of the game – finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Blackhawks found themselves down 8-0 in the early minutes, forcing Coach Palmer to take a 30 second timeout to regroup his team and get their heads into the action.
Out of the break, Miller scored Oxford’s first two points but the team mustered up just six points in the first quarter while Elmira Notre Dame held the eight-point margin.
The host Crusaders pulled ahead 21-8 in the second as Palmer recalled looking at the scoreboard, stating it was the worst point in the game for his Blackhawks.
