NORWICH - The Norwich Fire Department will be transporting the Easter Bunny around the city this weekend, with officials saying the visit should be a positive break from pandemic related negativity.

According to City of Norwich Fire Department Assistant Chief Patrick Ford, beginning at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 12, the Easter Bunny will ride through city streets on a fire truck. Ford said the route will take off in the south eastern part of Norwich, and work its way north.

He said they will start off on Prentice Street, moving east of Broad Street, and then head to Borden Town Circle. He added that from Borden Town Circle, they will head south to Chenango Ave.

“This year with everything going on and everyone stuck in their house we thought maybe we can get the Easter bunny out to help bring some cheer to everyone’s lives,” said Ford. “We’re not going to stop and do pictures, but we are going to do every street in the city.”

Ford said the Easter Bunny will be waving from a fire truck, and residents are encouraged to follow CDC guidelines when coming outside to see it.

“We’ve always done the Easter Egg hunt, but you’ve got to think out of the box when you’re experiencing something new,” he said. “This is a way that we can still do something fun for the kids, but we can keep everyone safe at the same time.”

He added that the fire department expects to be out for approximately an hour, and that for the most part they plan to be moving most of the time.

“Come out and wave at the Easter bunny, or if it's better for families they can open a window and stay inside their homes,” said Ford. “The kids are missing out on so much this Easter, but we’re going to get through this and we’re hoping this helps.”
