CHENANGO COUNTY - According to a report from the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, burglaries are up 63 percent compared to this time last year, and police said criminal justice reforms paired with the effects of social distancing may be the cause.
Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Joshua Gould said burglaries, disorderly conduct, and domestic incidents are all being reported at higher rates than this time last year.
“We’re up 63 percent in burglaries, we’re up 33 percent in disorderly conduct, and we’re up 16 percent in domestics,” said Gould. “I think it might be caused by a combination of bail reform and people being cooped up.”
“I think the longer this kind of quarantine stuff goes on, you might see more larcenies and burglaries taking place.”
Gould said since January usage of the civil department at the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office is down 84 percent from last year, and the number of traffic stops performed is 90 percent lower as well.
