SHERBURNE - New York State Police representatives confirmed that a teen drowned in the Chenango River yesterday following an investigation by multiple agencies. Police are reporting no indication of foul play at this time.

According to New York State Police Troop C Public Information Officer Aga Dembinska, at 5:05 p.m. on Wednesday New York State Police received a report of a person at the Chenango River fishing access that went underwater but did not resurface.

Dembinska identified Nicholas J. Russell, 18, of Smyrna as the victim. She said one of three people that were with him reported that while swimming he started to go underwater against his will, she said they attempted to help him, but were unable.

“The New York State Underwater Recovery Team and divers and an air boat from the Chenango County Bureau of Fire searched the river and the area surrounding it,” said Debinska. “Shortly after 8:00 p.m., the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team located the victim.”

“The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

She said New York State Police, the Village of Sherburne Police Department, Chenango County Bureau of Fire and Sherburne Fire and North Norwich Fire assisted at the Chenango River near State Route 80 and County Route 23 in the Village of Sherburne.

“There doesn’t appear to be any foul play in this case,” she added. “The victim was transported to a local funeral home.”
