CHENANGO COUNTY - According to a report from the New York State Comptroller’s Office, counties all throughout the state are feeling the impacts of the coronavirus, and the local treasurer’s office confirmed that Chenango County is currently $700,000 behind last year in sales tax.
According to New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, statewide tax receipts in May were down $766.9 million or 19.7 percent from the previous year.
“With an economy still suffocated by a global pandemic, the state’s finances took another serious hit in the month of May,” DiNapoli said. “We are now clearly seeing the recession’s impact on tax receipts.”
“As we continue to slowly re-open the economy, it’s critical that Washington act on our call for more federal aid.”
Chenango County Third Deputy Treasurer John Williams said as of Wednesday, the county is down 7.39 percent when compared to the same time last year. Williams said last year sales tax was at approximately 9.2 million in revenue, and this year the county has received 8.5 million.
