Police: Drugs, Mental Health Issues Led To Crime Spree And Nine-hour SWAT Team Presence In Smyrna Area

SMYRNA - On Monday more information was released regarding a series of criminal incidents that caused a prolonged search and stand-off with police. The incidents occurred in the early hours of Thursday night and ended later in the afternoon on June 19.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office reported a crime spree began late Thursday night and went into the early hours of Friday morning.

Police reported a man stole vehicles and a pistol; he also burglarized a business and damaged other property.

The suspect fled police in a vehicle and crashed it during the chase, before disappearing into a wooded area on foot and turning up at a residence in Smyrna a short time later.

Police observed the location for approximately nine hours Friday before sending in a SWAT team to arrest the suspect, 31-year-old Garett A. Hunter. No injuries were reported.

According to Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Joshua Gould, Hunter appears to have been suffering from a combination of drug and mental health issues.
