NORWICH – Last week, on Thursday, the City of Norwich Fire Department was awarded a $2,378.10 grant from FEMA to help better prepare first respondents during the COVID-19 health crisis.
"Operating during the pandemic with limited resources has required the Norwich Fire Department to explore and adapt some new methods to support COVID-19 protection of public health and safety of first response personnel," said City of Norwich Grants Coordinator Lorraine Keckeisen.
Fire Chief Jan Papelino reported that the City of Norwich Fire Department’s primary objective is to protect the health and safety of the public as well as their staff.
The City of Norwich was informed by Faith Vavra, Deputy District Director to Congressman Anthony Brindisi about the grant.
“We’ve had to deploy many new operating procedures which has increased expenses due to intensified decontamination methods within ambulances, firetrucks, the station, and staff living quarters,” said Papelino. “We want to thank FEMA and the selection committee for awarding our application as it helps us continue to effectively answer calls for assistance in serving the public and keeping our staff safe.”
