The Greene Legion Post 692 had its first monthly meeting since March on Monday July 20 at 6PM at the Lions Park pavilion. Its next meeting will be on the first Monday of August at 7PM at the Lion’s Club Pavilion.
All who have ever served in the Armed Forces Honorably are welcomed come rain or shine. We do do “Social Distancing etc. Thanks to the Lions for allowing our meetings at the Pavilion. A reminder that dues are due.
Please send your dues to our Post Office Box, John Girton, or Mark Sweet.
The Post is looking at Fundraisers. Who knows if Applefest (which is our biggest fundraiser) will be held this year? We are looking at the possibility of selling Branch Hats In addition to our other sales. The Post has several gigantic for us expenses coming up in the near future years. The Post is looking towards Veterans Day and hopefully having a joint Memorial-Veteran’s Day parade. Like many service groups we have so many things we would like to do but only so few that do the work. We couldn’t exist except for the aid we get from other institutions and groups around the community.
The Post is still providing Honor Guard Presence for veterans who pass away. If you have a veteran, widow, or active duty military member (Guard-Reserve-Active) in need of help, please call any of the following groups: Veterans Crisis Line 1-800-273-8255, Binghamton Vet Center 772-2393, VA Outreach Center 772-9100, County Outreach Officer 724-1299, Southern Tier Veterans Support Group 205-8332, Post Chaplain, or other questions J Koopman. A whole additional list of support Services are available in a pamphlet put out by the Southern Tier American Red Cross.
If a vet or their family needs help and government agencies aren’t responding
please contact Southern Tier Veterans STVSG. Veteran’s aid groups are still working through this virus war. If there is a death and or request for a military presence at a funeral or committal of a local veteran please contact Commander Larry Bourque at 656-9047.
If you have a question about the Post, donations, activities, and or want to buy items (Flags-grave markers, branch cups, tattered flags, Paver applications for the All Wars Memorial etc.), call us at or drop a note at our PO Box 149 Greene, NY 13778 or email at alpost692@gmail.com. All official business should go to our mail box. Amazon also has some good prices for patriotic items. Also please call the Commander. Please check the STVSG.org web page and our Greene Legion web page for veteran activities in the area.
I spent about an hour at the All Wars Monument recently trying to map Out where our relatives are for future generations of our family. My Eyes got bleary trying to locate them. It was uplifting to see names from Greene who were proud to serve. When I write about the Heroes below, I see
The same caring dedication to family, country, and God. I am also proud Of those who come legally to America where dreams can come true. New legal Immigrants used to take a test that I got a hold of. I wish it was a part Of the Regents tests in Schools. The test had 100 basic questions. I am Ashamed to say I didn’t score 100%. Here’s 5 questions: Who makes Federal Laws? What’s the introduction to the Constitution called? How many stripes are on the American Flag? Who becomes President if the President and Vice President both die? How many times can a Senator be re-elected? We are so blessed to be Americans.
This week's Hero of Greene and America is Burdette Sherwood.
He was born in Smithville Flats in 1913. He was inducted in the US Army
In Feb 1942. He did his Basic Training at Camp Forest, Tenn. and then went to Ft Lewis, Wash. He then went to the Mojave Desert before going to HAWAII. From there
he went to New Guinea and then Moretti. He came back to Hawaii and then went to Japan.
He then came back to the States and was discharged in Nov 1945. He rose to the
Rank of corporal. Greene and America are thankful to Burdette and his family for their service. His memory will continue to live on.
