CHENANGO COUNTY – Six people were indicted for felony crimes including assault, burglary, grand larceny, and arson after the coronavirus freeze on court activity was lifted late in July.

Representatives of the Chenango County District Attorney’s Office said arraignments and court appearances were only being held virtually after the coronavirus pandemic hit New York State, but that in late July some in-person restrictions were removed and sessions like grand jury were allowed to continue.

In a recent grand jury session, David H. Duvall, 47, of Bainbridge was indicted on second-degree assault, a class D felony, and third-degree possession of a weapon, a class D felony, following an incident at approximately 12:30 p.m. on April 17 in the Village of Bainbridge.

According to the indictment, Duvall struck a victim in the back of the head, on the left side of their face, and on the left arm with an 18-inch machete.

“This action did cause the victim to receive lacerations, which required surgery to repair and caused him substantial pain,” states the indictment.

Brian C. Carver, 39, of Earlville was indicted on third-degree arson, a class C felony, third-degree burglary, a class D felony, and third-degree criminal mischief, a class D felony after allegedly breaking the windows of and starting a fire in the Lighthouse Community Church in Earlville.

Carver’s indictment states that on April 8 Carver broke windows of the church, entered, and started a fire that caused serious damage to it.
