NORWICH – Fire department officials have determined that a garage fire in the City of Norwich earlier this week was caused by an electric bike battery, and warn lithium battery owners to use caution when storing their equipment.

According to City of Norwich Fire Department Chief Jan Papelino, at approximate 3:45 p.m. on Monday a garage on Mitchell Street in the City of Norwich was reported to be on fire.

Papelino said he arrived on scene at 3:46 p.m., and other emergency responders arrived about a minute after that.

“Engine Four was on scene at 15:47 (3:47 p.m.), and we were there for a little over half an hour before we cleared the scene,” said Papelino. “No one was injured and dealing with the fire was pretty quick and simple.”

“Being that the fire was on the floor and the garage doors were closed - the fire wasn’t able to grow due to a lack of oxygen.”
