NORWICH – A Johnson City woman accused of killing a Sherburne man late last year was arraigned in the Chenango County Court on Monday and pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.

According to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, the defendant, Kelly Gillett, 36, of Johnson City, called police at 11 a.m. on October 19, 2020, and reported a shooting. After arriving on scene police said she told them she was responsible and needed a lawyer.

Investigators said Gillett shot her boyfriend, John Ryan, 39, of Sherburne, inside his home at 7 Gould Drive in the Village of Sherburne. Police said he was shot multiple times with a 20 gauge shotgun.

“Basically, there was no argument or a fight,” said Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting following Gillett's arrest. “She took a shotgun and shot him, he tried to get away and she shot him again.”

“She called 911. She was at the scene and we took her into custody without incident.”
