NORWICH – Today lifelong Chenango County resident Brian Wessels announced his Republican candidacy for Chenango County Clerk in the 2021 election.
Wessels’ announcement follows current County Clerk Mary Weidman announcing her intent to retire at the end of her current term which ends on December 31, 2021.
“It is a true privilege and honor to run for this very important office. Mary Weidman has done an exceptional job as the Chenango County Clerk for more than two decades, and she will leave very big shoes to fill,” said Wessels. “I’m running for Chenango County Clerk because I believe my extensive background in management and public service will continue to ensure prompt and courteous service to the customers of the Clerk’s office .”
Born and raised in Chenango County, Wessels, age 49, has been employed by Chenango County for the past 24 years and currently serves as the county’s Director of the Area Agency on Aging.
“The County Clerk needs to be a proven leader who has experience working well with state agencies, County Board of Supervisors, all other county departments, and all walks of life that interact with the County Clerk’s Office”, said Wessels.
In his current role, Wessels is responsible for providing essential services for the elderly population of the county including the Home Delivered Meals Program, personal care aide service, Medicare counseling and enrollment, housing assistance, transportation, and other outreach services.
As an advocate for Chenango County’s aging population, Wessels has built and nurtured strong relationships with state lawmakers and other representatives in the State Capital to ensure much needed resources continue to be allocated to Chenango County residents.
Aside from his service with Chenango County, Wessels has also made community service a priority, volunteering for countless organizations throughout the county. Among those include the Hospice & Palliative Care of Chenango County Board of Directors, Chenango Health Network Board of Directors, Chenango Housing Improvement Program Board of Directors, United Way – Emergency Food & Shelter Committee Member, and City of Norwich Civil Service Commissioner, and serves as the Norwich High School Football Boosters Treasurer.
A lifelong Republican, Wessels graduated from Norwich High School and still resides in Norwich with his wife, Terri Grey-Wessels, where they have raised their six children. “My decision to run for Chenango County Clerk is because I am committed to serving our county with renewed energy and a vision for the future for many years to come,” he said. “I will be available to meet with residents throughout our county over the next several months, through election day, and beyond. It is important to me to hear your questions, comments and concerns.”
