BINGHAMTON - The Norwich Purple Tornado Girls Basketball team picked-up the 2020-2021 season exactly where they left off last year; pace of play, pace of play and a heaping table spoon of speed. A seasoned roster fresh off a Section IV title run a year ago proved that they’re still one of the premier teams to play in the Southern Tier.
On a Tuesday night match-up with the hosting Chenango Forks Blue Devils, Norwich proved victorious in their season opener with a lopsided win. The true force of the Purple Tornado took center stage as duo of Sydney Coggins and Emily Evans made their presence felt from the opening tip.
Coggins, a senior specializing in baskets from way outside the zip code- hit three of her four trifectas in the game in the opening minutes, recording 11 of her 16 points in the game just in the first quarter alone. Meanwhile, her teammate Evans recorded eight of her game high 19 points in the first quarter as well.
By the end of the first quarter, the Tornado took a 36-7 lead and never looked back, remaining in the driver seat all game long and never took their foot off the gas pedal. In addition to Evans’ 19 points and Coggins’ 16 points, junior point guard Kenzie Hess scored 13 points in the victory for NHS.
Chenango Forks’ Helena Willis scored a team high nine points for the Blue Devils.
