SHERBURNE- On Monday March 1st, the Sherburne-Earlville varsity girls’ basketball team won their first game of the season with a 42-27 victory over Canastota. Tessa Cole had a big night for the Marauders as she scored a game high 20 points on the evening to go along with her six steals and five rebounds.
Cole led the S-E charge in the first half, scoring 11 of the Marauders’ 19 points in the opening 16 minutes of play. Meanwhile, Canastota took some time to get their offense going as their two top scorers on the evening in Gabby Coppola and Emma Wood were held to a combined four points through the first eight minutes, but would soon find firm footing on the night as they combined for all 12 points for the visitors in the second period.
S-E held on to a slim 19-16 lead heading into halftime. The performance for the Marauders in the third quarter proved critical as their balance scoring in the period extended the Canastota defense with five different Marauders found the bottom of the net in the period.
Sherburne-Earlville extended their lead over Canastota to 30- 22 entering the fourth period. Tessa Cole scored six points in the crucial final minutes with teammate Hannah Todd-Rogers chipping in four of her own- opening the gap over the visiting Red Raiders with the Marauders clinching the 42-27 victory.
