CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango County Treasurer's Office has announced that the county may be able to receive up to $9.2 million in federal aid following the approval of The American Rescue Plan.
According to Chenango County Deputy Treasurer John Williams, during the pandemic Governor Andrew Cuomo installed a 20 percent state aid cut to government organizations throughout the state.
Williams said Chenango County can apply for approximately $9.2 million in direct federal aid thanks to a combination of The American Rescue Plan, but the county’s treasurer’s office needs to finish its financials before it’s able to apply.
“When the 20 percent cut was installed we didn’t fill positions and we cut expenses where we could,” said Williams. “We are only one of two counties in New York State that are debt free, and we wanted to keep it that way.”
Williams added that federal funds will be shared throughout the county, but that there are specific uses for the funds.
