MORRIS - Heavy rains and flooding left its toll along portions of the Chenango-Otsego county lines over the weekend, destroying roadways and causing widespread damage to homes and businesses.
Much of the area, including the villages of Morris and Gilbertsville, spent the weekend under flash flood warnings. Residents were pummeled by roughly two inches of rain Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Binghamton.
Powerful thunderstorms and flash flooding washed out roads and culverts, downed trees, and caused debris to block the channels of streams and creaks. Each community’s fire station reported flooding in their bay area.
Flooding caused mudslides in the center of the Village of Morris and an area of State Highway 51 to be washed away west of the village.
