CHENANGO COUNTY - Calls are growing louder for Governor Andrew Cuomo to step down from his position at the helm of New York’s legislature.
Key local representatives at the state and federal levels weighed in on Gov. Cuomo’s mishaps Tuesday, when Attorney General Letitia James announced findings of an independent investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against the governor. The investigation concluded that Cuomo harassed 11 women and, in one instance, used his authority to retaliate and intimidate at least one of his accusers.
James’ statement said the governor’s actions “violated multiple state and federal laws, as well as the Executive Chamber’s own written policies.”
Figures on both sides of the political spectrum have responded with calls for the legislature to take action if the governor refuses to step down.
Assemblyman Joe Angelino (R-122nd Assembly District):
“From the outset, I have called for a thorough investigation into Gov. Andrew Cuomo for the multiple allegations of sexual harassment from many of his female staffers. I would like to thank Attorney General Letitia James and the special investigators, Ms. Clark and Mr. Kim, who handled this inquiry with professionalism.”
“Those who came forward with sexual harassment allegations against the governor and the people of New York deserved to get to the bottom of this. I commend these victims for coming forward even when it was very difficult. Now it is time for the Legislature to remove the governor if he does not do the right thing by resigning immediately.”
Assemblyman John Lemondes (R-126th Assembly District):
“Following the results of the independent, non-partisan investigation, I am reigniting my calls for the governor to step down from office. If he refuses, the state Legislature must work swiftly to hold him accountable and remove him from office via impeachment. The breaking of federal and state law, the covering up of nursing home deaths followed by subsequent denial of accountability, and the sexual harassment and discrimination of employees must not be tolerated.”
“The work of Attorney General Letitia James and her team, as well as the brave women who stepped up to hold power accountable, cannot be understated, and I thank them for their sacrifice and hard work.”
Senator Fred Akshar (R-52nd Senate District):
"Based on the findings of the Attorney General’s independent and thorough investigation, it has become abundantly clear that the Governor must resign."
Senator Peter Oberacker (R-51st Senate District):
“The governor must resign immediately and face criminal charges. The governor said wait for the independent investigation from the attorney general, we now have that report and it is sickening to read. The heinous acts committed by the governor are unconscionable – he clearly violated the public trust, and moreover he treated a number of women in a disgusting, unlawful manner.”
“I commend those who courageously stood up to this predator and praise them for their bravery. Additionally, the governor’s behavior was covered up by others. The AG’s findings show high level staff members acted in concert with the governor and they too must be held accountable. We also cannot forget that additional investigations are moving forward, including a probe into needless nursing home deaths and the governor’s attempted coverup. Short of resignation, the State Assembly must stop dragging their feet and impeach the governor immediately.”
Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (R-22nd Congressional District):
“Attorney General Letitia James’ report is damning and deeply disturbing. Governor Andrew Cuomo sexually harassed young women and then created a culture of fear and intimidation to cover it up. He abused his position, broke the law, and betrayed the trust of New Yorkers. He must resign and be prosecuted immediately. We cannot have a two-tiered justice system in America, which is why his reign of criminal corruption must come to an end.”
Joint statement of U.S. senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY):
“As we have said before, the reported actions of the Governor were profoundly disturbing, inappropriate, and completely unacceptable. Today’s report from the New York State Attorney General substantiated and corroborated the allegations of the brave women who came forward to share their stories – and we commend the women for doing so.” “The New York State Attorney General has conducted an independent, thorough and professional investigation that found the Governor violated state and federal law, had a pattern of sexually harassing current and former employees, retaliated against at least one of the accusers, and created a hostile work environment.”
“No elected official is above the law. The people of New York deserve better leadership in the governor’s office. We continue to believe that the Governor should resign.”
