GREENE – Moore Memorial Library in Greene, with the support of The Raymond Foundation, recently digitized the Chenango American newspaper collection.

Moore Memorial Library was established in 1904 with the support of the Nathaniel and Rachael Moore family. The library opened with a collection of 7,500 books. Today the collection has grown to over 50,000 books, 42 magazines, and 3 newspapers. We currently offer materials in print, audio, DVD, and electronic formats. The library offers an open Wi-Fi network and public computer access. In 2007, we received a NYS library construction grant that allowed the library to greatly enhance our juvenile section and collections. A twenty-seat computer lab was established in 2009. Currently, we offer free computer classes to the public. The library shares space with the local historical society and houses a museum with an extensive collection of local history. A fifty-seat community room is also available.

The library mission is to provide current popular materials for all ages, purchase current reference and circulating materials to respond to the information needs of our citizens, and provide democratic access to important resources in our community. To that end, the library recently worked closely with The Raymond Foundation to digitize our collection of the Chenango American newspaper.

The Chenango American was Greene, New York’s local weekly newspaper for over 160 years. The paper started in 1855 and provided weekly local news to Greene and surrounding communities until it terminated operations in December of 2018. The library and local Historical Society currently own paper and microfilm copies of every issue from inception until closure. The newspaper recorded births, deaths, marriages and relevant local history for Greene and surrounding communities. The digitization project will protect the security of this local resource against fire, flood, and natural disaster. Electronic copies of the paper will be uploaded to the library’s website upon project completion. Website hosting of this resource will make it available globally to anyone who has access to the internet. The digital collection will be indexed and catalogued. This will allow patrons to do keyword and date range topic searches.

Watch our website: www.greenenylibrary.org in the coming weeks for this new resource!

Moore Memorial Library wishes to thank The Raymond Foundation for their generous support of this valuable project.
