Elmira Notre Dame 42, Unadilla Valley 22

ELMIRA - Elmira Notre Dame switched up its pass-happy offense, and that change had Unadilla Valley’s defense off-balance for one half of action in Friday night’s victory for the Crusaders.

“We had scouted them, and I don’t think they had run the ball well at all,” said UV coach Art Rigas. “They were throwing 30-40 times a game. What happened is their quarterback was injured in the last game, and they came into the game with a sweep and option running game.”

Based on that scouting report, UV’s thin roster prepared a defensive scheme to slow the Notre Dame passing game.

The Crusaders did pass for 157 yards in the game, but a 208-yard rushing performance - plus forcing three UV turnovers - was the difference.

Kaden Butts and Blake Wright had rushing TDs for the Storm, and Bruce Townsend recovered a fumble in the endzone for another Storm touchdown.

Matt Bodgan had a big day running the ball finishing with 146 yards to lead the UV attack.

UV trailed 36-8 at halftime, but the only Crusaders touchdown in the second half came on an interception return for a score with two seconds left in the game.

“This group of kids has faced more adversity than any other group I’ve coached in 33 years of coaching,” Rigas said. “It’s a credit to the kids. They have good attitudes and they’re keeping their chins up.”

UV hosts Lansing on Friday.

Sidney 28, Bainbridge-Guilford 0

BAINBRIDGE - Sometimes, it’s just not your day.

That was the case for Bainbridge-Guilford Friday night, but it definitely was not the case for Sidney and quarterback Alec Fogarty.

Fogarty passed for one touchdown and ran for two more leading the Warriors past their local rival.

“We just didn’t play well,” said B-G coach Israel Lorimer. “We didn’t block or tackle well, and they wanted it more. We had some turnovers and they had some turnovers. We didn’t take advantage of situations again.”

Sidney scored on its opening possession of the game as Fogarty capped the drive with a five-yard TD run.

After B-G punt, Sidney drove again for a touchdown.

The Warriors were aided by a B-G face-mask penalty on a third-and-long to extend the drive, and also converted another third-and-long en route to Fogarty’s 13-yard TD pass to Charlie Thiel.

Chris Moreno made it 21-0 at the half scoring on a 15-yard dash, and Fogarty’s 30-yard TD scamper capped the scoring.

“We did a good job on first down, we did a good job on second down, and we got them into a third and long,” Lorimer said. “And then they’d make a play. We have a young team with almost everyone coming back. We’ll learn our lessons and get better.”
