NORWICH — A City of Norwich public hearing on proposed marijuana legislation will take place tonight at 6:30 p.m. Afterward the city common council will likely vote on whether or not to allow on-site consumption establishments within the city.

The proposed local law would legalize marijuana retail sales and on-site consumption establishments. Council members have already opted to take no action on retail sale, thus allowing dispensaries in the City of Norwich.

"At this point the way the local law would read, is that it will be only to opt out of the on-site consumption. So we will not be voting on dispensaries and by default they will automatically be legal," explained Alderman Matthew Caldwell.

A decision on whether or not to allow on-site consumption establishments, however, had been postponed until tonight’s meeting. Officials have confirmed there will be a public hearing allowing residents to voice their opinions on the legislation.

Residents can attend the meeting in person at One Court Plaza, or tune in on the City of Norwich Facebook page, where meetings are live streamed.
