Norwich 75, Unatego 72
NORWICH - Norwich went toe-to-toe with high-scoring Unatego, and withstood a last-second tying three attempt to prevail in a non-league matchup Tuesday night at Jack Jones Gymnasium.
The Purple Tornado grabbed a 75-68 after two free throws from Torin Lawrence with less than 30 seconds remaining.
Miles Mohrien hit one free throw for the Spartans (10-2), and after a Norwich turnover, Shea Barber canned a three pairing the six-point deficit to three.
Unatego got the ball back one more time after another exchange of possessions, but Mohrien's tying 3 attempt was well off the mark.
"Unatego is one of the top Class C teams, and we were able to hold them off down the stretch," said Norwich coach Tom Collier. "We are still a work in progress, but hopefully we can be at full strength coming down the last few games."
Norwich secured a seven-point lead with 50 seconds remaining after a Jerell Stokes 3 that gave Norwich a 72-65 lead, and a Lawrence free throw moments later seemed to put the game out of reach.
Norwich built an eight-point halftime lead, and led by five on the strength of Keegan Franklin's big night.
Franklin scored all 25 of his points through three quarters of play, while Lawrence had 13 of his 16 points.
In the final quarter three-pointers from Steven Dowdall and Wyatt Thornton helped the Purple Tornado (6-7) maintain its lead, along with an early fourth-quarter bucket from Stokes.
Barber led Unatego with a game-high 32 points.
"Our seniors, Keegan Franklin and Torin Lawrence, led the way for us tonight," Collier said. "We will depend heavily on them the rest of the way. The return of Logan Ford will also help us. It is going to be a fight to the finish for us, and hopefully, we can stay COVID-free down the stretch to get us to eight wins."
