Purple Tornado Basketball: Girls Win Big Over Owego On Senior Night; Boys Falter At Owego

Girls Basketball:

Norwich 79, Owego 34

NORWICH- The Purple Tornado ladies truly pulled out all the stops at Jack Jones gymnasium on Friday night, as the Purple dominated in their senior night victory by a 79-34 margin over the visiting Owego Indians.

Three Tornado seniors scored double-digits in the contest as, Norwich senior Emily Evans scored a game-high 28 points, with 22 of her points coming in the first half. Fellow NHS senior Margaret Dougher scored 12 first quarter points for the Purple as she went on her way to score 15 points in the game.

Rounding out the double-digit senior scoring was Maddy Morris who pitched in four trifectas to score 12 points in the game. NHS’ point guard MacKenzie Hess nearly reached double-figures, scoring nine points.

Owego never had a quiet night on offense as NHS’ tenacious defense prevented the Indians from recording a double-digit scoring quarter. The Tornado defense only allowed two Owego players to record double-digit scoring. Owego’s Maddie Bennett and Madison McEvoy each scored 10 points in the loss.

Norwich (9-5) returns to the hardwood tonight when they host Union-Endicott as Norwich High School’s Jack Jones gymnasium with tip-off set for 7:30pm.

Boys Basketball:

Owego 60, Norwich 39

OWEGO- Led by the duo of 6’6” big men John and Joe Bangel, Owego ran away with the 60-39 victory over the Purple Tornado boys on Saturday afternoon.

The Bangel boys combined for 38 of Owego’s points in the contest, as well as being the only two Owego athletes to record double-digit scoring. John Bangel scored a game-high 25 points and Joe Bangel pitched in 13 points.

The Tornado entered the halftime intermission facing a 25-17 deficit, but the host Indians blew the doors off NHS with a 19 point third period to put the game nearly out of reach entering the fourth quarter 44-27.

Norwich senior Keegan Franklin was the sole Tornado to record double-digit scoring, as he put up 11 points in the loss.

Norwich (6-8) is back in action on Tuesday night at 7:30pm when they host Delhi, the 14th ranked team in NYS Class C Boys basketball at Norwich High School.
