NEW YORK — Assemblyman Joseph Angelino (R,C,I-Norwich) is announcing his re-election campaign. The assemblyman is eager to continue the fight for upstate New Yorkers.
Angelino is serving in his first term. He is the ranking Republican on the Assembly Committee on Oversight, Analysis and Investigation. In his role, he pressured Majority Democrats to open an investigation into then Gov. Cuomo for his role in the thousands of deaths in New York nursing homes. He often lends his expertise in law enforcement while debating bills on the floor sponsored by downstate Assembly liberals who are working to further erode responsibility for committing crimes.
“Upstate New York is filled with hardworking, amazing people and I couldn’t be more honored to represent them in the Assembly. I have worked diligently to advocate for their needs and values to stave off the one-size-fits-all approach that imposes New York City’s progressive policies on upstate residents,” said Angelino. “I will always stand for integrity, as our region highly values personal freedom and responsibility. I am proud to champion these values in the Capitol.”
In his first year, Angelino voted against $4.4 billion in taxes in, at the time, the largest budget the state had seen, only to be outdone by this year’s budget proposal. He has been advocating to put the state on the path to recovery from the pandemic, which includes a full lift of the mask mandate which still impacts New York’s children.
Before his role as an assemblyman, Angelino retired as the police chief for the City of Norwich, a role in which he served for nearly 20 years. While in his role as police chief he was also tapped to be fire chief. During a leave of absence from the Norwich Police, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1985. He is a three-time combat veteran serving in the 1991 Gulf War and the Iraq War in 2003 and 2005, for which he received two Purple Heart medals. He retired in 2008 from the Marine Reserves as a Sergeant Major, the highest enlisted rank.
Although Angelino is an incumbent, he will be running for a new Assembly District. The new district, AD 121, includes several new towns. The new district includes the majority of Chenango and Broome counties, and portions of Madison, Otsego, Sullivan and Delaware counties.
