NORWICH – The Chenango Greenway Conservancy was selected to receive assistance from the Cornell Design Connect program in designing improvements to the Stone Quarry property.
During the Spring 2022 semester, a team of Cornell students will work with members of the community and the Chenango Greenway Conservancy to develop plans for an entrance to the Stone Quarry property off Wheeler Ave., a trailhead parking area and improvements to the overlook and trails at the property.
The students began their work with a site visit on Saturday, February 19th and were greeted by neighbors and Mayor Doliver.
The students braved icy conditions and even a snow squall as they made their way up the hill to enjoy the view of Norwich from the overlook. Mayor Doliver said, “We appreciate the assistance from these talented students to help move this important community project forward and look forward to working with them.”
In the coming weeks, the Cornell Team will be reaching out to the community for ideas and input to create a vision and design that reflects local needs and interests.
The group plans to distribute an online survey in the coming weeks and hold a public meeting as well.
Cornell Design Connect is a student run community design and planning organization at Cornell University that partners with communities to address significant planning and design issues through a participatory and multidisciplinary process.
The Chenango Greenway Conservancy is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) public charity organized in 2006 to develop a network of multiple use recreation trails in and around the City of Norwich.
With strong community support, the Chenango Greenway completed the purchase of the Stone Quarry in December 2021 and is turning its attention to improving the property.
The Stone Quarry is easily accessible from downtown Norwich and connects to several large forested properties on West Hill with nearly 20 miles of multiple use trails.
