NORWICH – In recognition of National Quilting Day on Saturday, March 19, the Chenango Piecemakers Quilt Guild celebrated by presenting a special quilt to the first baby born that day at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital.

The guild has done this every year, except for the last two years due to Covid precautions.

This year, their quilt was able to present a quilt designed for a baby girl to Wrenlee, daughter of Cierra and Grant, residents of Norwich.

Wrenlee was born on Thursday, March 24 at 7:36 p.m., weighed in at over 9 pounds, and measured a healthy 20 inches.

Piecemaker Nancy Carney represented the guild and extended the group’s warm wishes as she presented the locally hand made and colorful quilt. This quilt was made especially for the National Quilting Day baby and included a special tag to commemorate the event.

A small group of women who enjoy quilting began the guild in 1986. Currently, there are over 50 members.

The Piecemakers said they belive in having a very strong sense of community and use their love of quilting to not only promote the art, but also as a commitment to serve through projects such as this.

The group are among the generous community members who make and donate quilts to many newborns born at UHS Chenango Memorial and other patients and residents.

The tradition of the “First Baby” quilt began years ago as a significant way to observe National Quilting Day by involving the community.

The Chenango Piecemakers meet the second Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, 11 West Main Street in Norwich. Anyone interested in joining the guild or in learning more about what they do is welcome.
