NORWICH – Chenango Arts Council is pleased to announce the next exhibit featured in their Mariea Brown and Raymond Loft Galleries.

“Loom and Doom” is a topical look at how art and environmentalism can literally be weaved together. Textile artist Kelsey Merreck Wagner has transformed plastic waste into attractive tapestries, inspired by the teachings of Black Mountain College’s Anni Albers, and the idea to give life as art to the trash so often seen marring our naturally bucolic landscape.

“Weaving is an inherently meditative process connecting mind and body with creative production,” explains Merrick Wagner. “I am continually thinking of the weavings and other artwork [Albers] and her students created from recycled and natural materials. During my walks through the forested mountains and streams, my disappointment at seeing trash on the landscape sparked a new idea for a creative piece.”

Although not the first textile exhibit in their galleries, “Loom and Doom” marks a first for Chenango Arts Council. Not only is it a showcase exclusively of weavings, but the pieces are created from plastic and other “discarded” items. “It’s important to expose the public to art created from non-traditional materials,” enthuses Executive Director Alecia ONeill. “I admire Kelsey for not only creating original art from found materials, but for inspiring and encouraging others to do the same.”

The show will open with a reception on Friday, April 8, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Delicious treats from The Cottage Bakery, operating out of Creative Works in Norwich, New York, will be on offer.

“Loom and Doom” will be on display from April 8 through April 29. Gallery hours are weekdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. or on weekends by appointment.
