ALBANY – Assemblyman Joseph Angelino (R,C,I-Norwich) is speaking out after Assembly Democrats in the Codes Committee “killed” several public safety bills he sponsors, meaning these bills will not be brought to the floor to be voted on by their merits alone.

“The failure by Assembly Majority Leadership to act on sensible public safety legislation sends a clear message that they do not care about law-abiding residents and their well-being. Adding insult to injury, this action was taken during National Crime Victims Week,” said Angelino. “New York progressives continue to bend over backward for lawbreakers while forsaking crime victims and our law enforcement. When is enough going to be enough?”

The following public safety bills were rejected by the Assembly Majority leadership:

- Bail for Gun Crime (A.7066)  – Would remove all gun crimes from the no-bail list from 2019 bail reforms;

- Shooting Into Crowds (A.4259)  – Would make shooting into crowds with the intent to harm a Class B violent felony;

-   Additional Five Years for Possession    (A.4762)  – Would tack on another five years of imprisonment for committing a felony while possessing a loaded weapon;

- Paula’s Law (A.6017)  – Would prevent parole for those who sexually assault or murder children;

- Judicial Discretion for Additional Crimes (A.7772)  – Would add any crime resulting in death or physical injury to list of qualifying offenses which would allow a judge to impose bail or deny pre-trial release;

- Shooting at a Public Safety Officer (A.9608)  – Would make shooting at a public safety officer, peace officer, police officer, corrections officer, firefighter or emergency services professional; and 

– Hate Crimes Against Law Enforcement (A.3824)  – Would designate offenses against law enforcement officers.
