HORSEHEADS – On May 25, the Norwich Purple Tornado track and field teams competed in the Section IV Class B championship held at Horseheads High School. The boys finished in second place with 145 points, behind Vestal’s 161 while the girls took fifth with 68 points behind Johnson City’s top 138 points.
For the boys team, Richard Fuller earned a first place finish in the 400 meter event (52.25) while teammate Mason Edwards finished in eighth with a time of 58.64 seconds. Fuller also finished in fourth place in the 200 meter dash (24.50 seconds) while Holden Ryan took second place (23.92).
In the 100 meter dash, Spencer Root achieved third place with a time of 12.38 seconds as Lucas Craddock finished in fifth (12.46). Craddock competed in the triple jump, earning first place (42-1.75) while finishing second in the long jump (19-8.50) and fourth in the high jump (5-6).
Makaio Sutton finished in third place in the 1600 meter event with a time of 4:54.02 while Nolan Reid finished behind him in fourth (4:56.17). Sutton also took second place in the 3200 meter event (10:40.31).
Norwich earned two first place finishes in the team relays. In the 4x400 relay, a team of Gabe Decker, Fuller, Anthony Ragonese, and Zander Sutton achieved first with a time of 3:38.90. A team of M. Sutton, Caden Sutton, Z. Sutton, and Reid won the 4x800 relay (8:46.10).
In the discus event, Alek Smietana earned second place with a throw of 106-05 as teammate PJ Bookamer finished fifth (96-0). Bartalo Bourne took third place in pole vault (8-0).
For the girls team, Olivia Schiraldi finished in the top-10 in four events. She earned a fourth place finish in the 400 meters event (1:10.51). She finished seventh in the 200 meter dash (31.14 seconds). She finished eighth in the 100 meter dash (14.70 seconds) before taking second in the high jump (4-10).
Teammate Alexandria Roque earned a second place finish in the 3000 meters event (13:48.01) and a seventh place finish in the 1500 meters with a time of 6:10.41.
Briley Beckwith finished third in the 400 meter hurdles (1:12.15) while achieving seventh place in the 100 meter hurdles (21.38 seconds). She also took seventh in the high jump (4-0).
Shakira Alexander continued to dominate in the shot put and discus events. She earned first in both events. In the shot put event, she finished with a 36-4 with Lexi Slate finished in fourth place (30-0.50). Alexander had a best throw of 94-00 in the discus while Slate finished second (93-04). Robyn Diehl earned fourth place in the pole vault event (6-06).
