SHERBURNE — The Sherburne Rotary Club will be putting on this year's Fourth of July fireworks display at dusk on July 4, at the Sherburne-Earlville Central School grounds.

Lighting the sky with fireworks is a long-standing tradition for the Town of Sherburne, and several area organizations have gotten involved in the festivities over the years.

"It’s moved around for a few years, different people have taken it on over the course of the last few years. I think Rotary’s done it the last three, the Legion did it two years before that, and then the Lion’s Club did it before that," explained Town of Sherburne Mayor and Sherburne Rotary Club member Bill Acee.

"It’s the anniversary of our country, and we have tried to maintain it every year as long as I can remember."

Even throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, when most in-person and group gatherings were cancelled, Sherburne still found a way to carry on the tradition.

"We made it a stay in your car event. We shot off the fireworks and people parked in their cars and stayed within the bounds of their cars," said Acee. "We didn’t have any other events with it, we just had that where you could pull up in your car and sit on your car, or stand on your car, or around your car, and then we shot off the fireworks. Everyone was distanced and then we didn’t offer any other extracurricular things to do or programs or anything like that."

The fireworks are completely free to attend, and Acee said plenty of parking will be available for area residents who wish to attend.

"Show up early, there's plenty of parking. You can park around the school grounds, people can park all over the place and they can watch it from the surrounding area," he said. "Enjoy the fireworks and celebrate the birth of our country and our freedom."
