NORWICH – The 2022 Greater Norwich Foundation Scholarship recipients gathered at NBT Bank in Norwich on Wednesday, July 13.
Most of the scholarships given by the Greater Norwich Foundation are named for a past beneficiary. This is in recognition of their generosity to the foundation, and generally is not a condition of their gift.
Recently, however, a successful Norwich native indicated that he would like to have a scholarship given in recognition of the support he received from the Norwich community and certain citizens while he was growing up and attending college. He asked to know the amount that he would be expected to give to GNF to have a scholarship of a certain amount given at a certain interval. Thus, a new scholarship was established.
Each year, the Scholarships Committee expresses regret that there are not enough scholarships for the deserving students. Although we have increased the number of awards and the amount of each, there is a need for more scholarships.
In total, over $90,000 in scholarships was awarded this year by the Greater Norwich Foundation. In addition to the above scholarships, the Greater Norwich Foundation provided a total of $425,000 to non-profit community organizations in the greater Norwich area during the fiscal year ending March 31, 2022. A copy of the annual report is available in the office of NBT Bank.
