NORWICH – In celebration of the Chenango County Fair’s 175th birthday, the Chenango County Historical Society (CCHS) will unveil a new exhibition in The Loomis Barn during the annual “Summer Barn Party,” to be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. this Friday at 41 Rexford St., Norwich.

Along with vintage artifacts, the exhibit includes a commemorative piece of interactive artwork designed by Lynn Morris of Sherburne as well as engaging Chenango County Fair paintings created by artist Daniel Mosner of Oxford.

The “Celebrating 175 Years of Summer Traditions” exhibit also offers a unique virtual component which will debut on Friday evening as well. Curated by Marisa Modugno, a visiting Research Fellow from the Upstate Institute at Colgate University, the inaugural “Chenango Stories” oral history project features memories of the Chenango County Fair.

In keeping with the theme, “Summer Barn Party” guests will enjoy delicious carnival-inspired treats by Kandi’s Kitchen and tasty birthday cupcakes from Cottage Bakery. Beverage tastings will be offered by Better Daze Winery, Forged Brewing Company, Hidden Springs Brewhouse, and Old Home Distillers. Festivities will include music by DJ Jim Baldwin, lovely hanging floral pieces from Pires Flower Basket, and a special visitor from Piela View Farm.

Renewing a tradition established in 2019, the evening will feature an honored guest who has the distinction of “Making History.” In celebration of his enduring impact on the continued legacy of agriculture in Chenango County, a special appearance will be made by Henry J. Drexler.

As Chenango County Historian, Drexler has spent much of his tenure conducting extensive research on the Chenango County Agricultural Society – the official presenting organization of the Chenango County Fair – in order to celebrate and share its dynamic history.

The ultimate way to enjoy a summer evening, the Summer Barn Party is a major fundraiser for CCHS, attracting nearly 100 community supporters each year. Event proceeds support a significant portion of the organization’s annual operating budget. Event Day tickets are $45 each and will be available beginning at 5:30 p.m.

First established in 1939, CCHS is the primary organization dedicated to actively and comprehensively preserving the history of Chenango County. The area’s premier heritage museum, the organization celebrates local culture – unique traditions, noteworthy residents, and unusual stories of the region.
